The Intelligent Fool

Let's just get weird with it.

Back in the saddle…

It’s been a minute, y’all.

My name is Tim Brechlin, and I am the Intelligent Fool: A label shamelessly cribbed from Albert Einstein, affectionately suggested to me by a former colleague in the wild world of digital marketing. It’s a label which I embrace wholeheartedly, because one of my core tenets is that one can never forget that, ultimately, we only truly know a small portion of what’s out there … and, far more importantly, that we will always make mistakes: I used to think that I learned by doing, but that isn’t true: We learn by making mistakes, analyzing what led to those mistakes, and avoiding those precursors.

At my most basic level, I am a lover of life, living and fried cheese (the last of which may or may not be a side effect of hailing from the Midwest — from Chicago, Illinois, to Dubuque, Iowa, to Madison, Wisconsin, to Baltimore, Maryland, then back to Wisconsin, and now back in Iowa). My life revolves around doing my very best to know at least a little about a lot of things. Long story short: I studied journalism and public relations in college, became a photographer, then became a video producer, then became a magazine and website editor (while still doing photos, videos and graphic design), and then spent the next long while in marketing.

On this blog, you’ll find musings on several topics: Life and living, of course, since the love of those is partially how I define myself. Travel and tourism, as I have spent significant time working as a destination marketer, and as colleagues will tell you, I have some very strong ideas regarding the field, its past sins, its current problems and its future successes. Digital marketing, and best practices within the field, form a large part of my writings.

But finally, everything here is written from the perspective of a gratefully recovering alcoholic. Sobriety has given me much in my life, and I hope to give back in some small fashion.
